My baby isn't meeting milestones
It's completely natural to wonder whether your baby is developing at the right pace. Milestones are guides, not deadlines - and there's a wide range of "normal." At the same time, early action always leads to better outcomes. If something feels off, trust that instinct.
What an OT looks for in this area
- •Whether key motor milestones (rolling, sitting, standing, walking) are emerging within expected age ranges
- •Quality of movement - not just whether they can do it, but how they do it
- •Symmetry: using both sides of the body equally
- •Early fine motor skills: reaching, grasping, transferring objects between hands
- •How your baby responds to their environment - sounds, faces, stimulation
Free home activity ideas
Tummy time (0–6 months)
Start with 2–3 minutes a few times a day on a firm surface. Tummy time builds neck, shoulder, and core strength needed for all future motor milestones.
Reach and grab play (3–9 months)
Hang objects within reaching distance during play. Encourage your baby to grasp, transfer, and explore different textures - rattles, soft toys, wooden rings.
Supported sitting (4–7 months)
Use a Boppy pillow or rolled towels to support sitting while your baby practices balance. Always supervise.
Encourage crawling (7–10 months)
Place toys just out of reach. Crawling builds bilateral coordination, core stability, and visual-motor integration - all foundational for reading and writing later.
